Welcome aboard! Let's embark on a journey through the development of an Inflight Entertainment (IFE) Wellness area. Please take a seat and fasten your seatbelt. Our destination: to help travellers find calm during their flight and arrive feeling refreshed and rested.

Overview

Through research, I discovered that millennials, who are conscious of their health and well-being, make up a large percentage of international travellers. Long-haul flights can be stressful and overwhelming, so I envisioned a dedicated well-being section within the IFE system to provide tools and activities to combat these challenges.

Challenge

The vision was to offer tools such as meditation, breathwork, and movement, to help combat jetlag and provide a distraction from the discomfort and stress of flying. Other pain points of travellers such as boredom, poor circulation, and anxiety.

Re-structuring the information architecture

The information architecture was structured to nest the well-being area at the same level as movies, games, and audio, making it easy for passengers to find and access the well-being area.

User flow: Simplicity and ease

My focus was on simplicity and ease of use, so I created a user flow to allow quick access to desired content with just two clicks from the IFE homepage.

Sketch & wireframing

I turned my sketches into wireframes, featuring a clean and minimal design. Designing a navigation menu and hero section for easy discovery of the different categories, which included options for meditation, breathwork, movement, and more.

A visual style inspired by the night sky

I chose a dark theme and a colour palette inspired by the night sky and aurora. This provided a tranquil feel and reduced eye strain for all passengers, while also being less distracting to neighbouring passengers.

The journey doesn't end here

However, the journey doesn't end here. I’m always questioning and testing my design decisions to make sure they are the best they can be. For example, I’m currently questioning the use of outline icons and whether they provide enough contrast to draw the user's attention.

Learnings

From this design experience, I have gained several valuable insights and learnings:

-Understanding the needs and wants of your target audience is crucial to creating a product.

-A clear and simple user flow helps provide a seamless and intuitive experience.

-Keeping the design clean, and minimal can positively impact the user's experience.

-Dark themes and a calming colour palette can reduce eye strain and contribute to a tranquil environment.

-Consideration of accessibility for different ages and backgrounds can help create a more inclusive experience for all users.

These learnings can be applied to future design projects, leading to even better results and user experiences.
